Fire above and the lake below: the image of Opposition. Thus the superior man, amidst the community, preserves his individuality.

Meaning

Divergence, tension, opposing perspectives. Differences are not necessarily conflicts. The moment calls for finding unity in diversity.

The six lines

Line 1 (bottom)

Regret vanishes. If you lose your horse, do not pursue it; it will return of its own accord. When you see wicked people, guard yourself against all fault.

Line 2

One meets one's master in a narrow alley. No blame.

Line 3

One sees the cart pulled back, the oxen halted, a man with nose and hair cut off. No good beginning, but a good end.

Line 4

Isolated by opposition, one meets a man of like mind in whom one can trust. Despite the danger, no blame.

Line 5

Regret vanishes. The companion bites through the coverings. If one goes to him, how could there be blame?

Line 6 (top)

Isolated by opposition, one sees one's companion as a pig covered with mud, as a cart full of devils. At first one bends the bow against him, then one lays the bow aside. He is not a brigand, he is a suitor. Going forth, one encounters rain, and then comes good fortune.
