The Wanderer. Success through smallness. The perseverance of the wanderer brings good fortune.

The Image

Fire on the mountain: The image of The Wanderer. Thus the superior man is clear and careful in inflicting punishments and does not prolong lawsuits.

Meaning

Journey, passage, impermanence. The wanderer does not become attached. The moment demands lightness, adaptability, and prudence in relationships.

The six lines

Line 1 (bottom)

If the wanderer busies himself with trivial things, he draws misfortune upon himself.

Line 2

The wanderer arrives at an inn. He has his possessions with him. He obtains the perseverance of a young servant.

Line 3

The wanderer's inn burns. He loses the perseverance of his young servant. Danger.

Line 4

The wanderer rests in a shelter. He obtains his possessions and an axe. My heart is not content.

Line 5

He shoots a pheasant. He is hit by the first arrow. In the end, this brings praise and office.

Line 6 (top)

The bird burns its nest. The wanderer laughs at first, then must lament and weep. He loses his cow through negligence. Misfortune.
