The army needs perseverance and a strong man. Good fortune without blame.

The Image

Within the earth there is water: The image of the Army. Thus the noble man increases his masses by being generous toward the people.

Meaning

Organization, discipline, leadership. The situation demands structure and benevolent authority to channel forces.

The six lines

Line 1 (bottom)

An army must set forth in good order. If the order is not good, misfortune threatens.

Line 2

In the midst of the army. Good fortune. No blame. The king grants a triple decoration.

Line 3

The army perhaps transports corpses in the wagon. Misfortune.

Line 4

The army retreats. No blame.

Line 5

There is game in the field. It is advantageous to catch it. No blame. Let the eldest lead the army.

Line 6 (top)

The great prince issues orders, founds states, invests families with fiefs. Inferior men should not be employed.
